A contract is the best way for a writer to protect themselves in the freelance industry. By getting the client to sign a contract, the writer creates legal options that they can use if the client does not pay. Start With the Title and the Parties


The first thing writers should do is create a title for the contract. This could be a simple phrase like “Freelance Web Content Contract” or “Freelance Ghostwriting Contract”. The title should be centered in the middle of the page in bold type. Afterward, the writer must name the parties of the contract. The independent contractor will by the writer. Filling in the Blank Space


Most templates will include a blank space for the writer to fill out a description of the services provided. This will normally encompass about three or four sentences. Discuss Payment Requirements


A contract would not be complete if it did not discuss payment options. The writer should be specific about how much, when and how they are paid. They should also detail any interest charges for late payments. With new clients, smart writers will often set up milestone payments or upfront deposits. This protects the writer from completing the entire project without pay. It also helps make the project easier by breaking it into smaller, more manageable pieces.
